A Municipal Drain Project

The problem - Roadside ditch that was once a stream in Kitchener, Ontario is to be further altered using standard engineering practices to manage flood flows.

The alternative - Design urban stream and valley system to be more natural. It should still handle the flood flows and provide constructed wetlands for bioassimilation of nutrient/pollutants in runoff from a high traffic road and adjacent agricultural field. The valley system would be planted using native vegetative species. Construction would provide an opportunity for rehabilitating aquatic and terrestrial habitat. The system could integrate a trail system for the enjoyment of local residents.

The Final Design Concept and Implementation

Kolb Creek, Kitchener, Ont., - 1993 natural channel design for municipal drain integrating terrestrial, wetland and aquatic habitat in redesigned valley system.

This type of design can be implemented to restore drainage ditches to handle flood flows, but also include components to improve water quality and rehabilitate riverine ecosystems to a more diverse state. They often are equal in cost or cheaper to construct, require less maintenance over the long term, and provide for human health, safety and enjoyment. A system such as this also provides improvements in habitat for aquatic and terrestrial wildlife species. This project was completed in 1993 and can be observed along Lackner Boulevard at Victoria Street in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.
