The size of the current model, (FMB IV - shown above) was increased during design to serve as a work table. It weighs approximately 20 pounds and measures 2 inches deep by 10 3/4 inches wide by 46 inches long. The permanent headboard where the display is located measures 5 1/2 inches high by 6 1/2 inches long by 7 inches wide (the battery, speaker and peripheral device connectors are located within this area).

FMB IV can incorporate up to 90 keys with one shift key allowing each key to be programmed with 2 functions for up to 180 functions. The shifted mode of the ruler line can also be designated with an additional 40 functions, for a total of 220 functions. For instance, the alphabet would occupy 26 functions, the numeric characters (0 - 9) would take up another 10 functions. About 17 functions are dedicated to general FMB operation (e.g. Off, shift, cursor movement etc.). There are therefore 167 functions left for user defined fields. User defined data fields (ie. functions ) would include, for example, date, location, loran C start, loran C end , time start, time end, basket weight, species codes, sex, specimen weight, # of specimens, tag # etc. Each data field requires one programmed function key.

Note: that the length of the FMB does not determine the length of fish which can be measured. We have incorporated a special 'REVERSE' function into the FMB that allows you to measure any fish length. This function is normally setup at the beginning of a sampling session by entering the distance from the headboard to a fixed auxiliary headboard (i.e. the end of the table, bulkhead. etc.). When a fish is encountered that is longer than the direct entry measuring line, the head of the fish is placed against the auxiliary headboard the 'REVERSE key' is touched and then the tail of the fish touched. The measurement entered and displayed on the FMB will be the true length of the fish.
